1st job as Nurse Educator: How do I get started?

๐Ÿ“š  Nurse Educator-How do I get started?๐Ÿ“•

In the challenging times that we are living in with a national pandemic, financial ruins, and social injustice, education is more critical than ever.

๐Ÿ“ŒSo, how do we engage with our learners to equip them with the knowledge they need to provide quality nursing care? Well, it begins with the understanding of how learning happens and the value of engagement and connection.

๐Ÿ“–Educating the most trusted profession in America is a privilege and honor. It's a form of servant leadership and hope you'll go on this journey with me as I kick off the next several blogs sharing my experiences and thoughts on the Nurse Educator role and why our time is NOW!๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ’ŽHere are a few keys to us getting started...
๐Ÿ’ก#1: What is your current role?
~If you're in a staff nurse role, let your manager know that you're interested in nursing education.
~If you're in a leadership role, let your manager know about your passion and develop a plan to transition to nursing education.
๐Ÿ’ก#2: What is your education level?
~You will need to be educated as the Master's level with MSN-Nursing Education.
๐Ÿ’ฅThere are
several programs I would recommend if you are in North Carolina area-UNCG (https://nursing.uncg.edu/academics/graduate/masters/) and WSSU (https://www.wssu.edu/admissions/programs/nursing.html). If you're not, I would recommend GCU (https://www.gcu.edu/college-of-nursing-and-health-care-professions.php).

These are all programs that I've taught in, or have completed myself and can attest to the robustness and readiness that you will walk out the door with and apply the skills and knowledge learned on Day#1 in your new Nursing Educator role.

๐Ÿ’ก#3: What environment is aligned with your passion in education-Academia or Service (Clinical)?
~These are very different environments, and an important step to figure out. You'll prepare differently for your journey based on this decision.

Well, that's enough for now to get you started!

I look forward to our next chat about this important opportunity to serve and shape nursing excellence!๐Ÿ™‡

๐Ÿ’–~Your Nurse Leader

NLN Certified Nurse Educator Exam Review-Episode 37: Learning Objectives and Outcomes

Why should I choose nursing leadership?

Why Nursing Leadership? COVID has placed so much strain and stress on nursing leaders, so why should I choose to be a nursing leader? Well, the answer is multi-faceted, but it starts with your passion and purpose. Nursing leadership is NOT what you do, it's WHO YOU ARE!! I've always shared with my mentors that leadership is not about a title, it's the responsibility that you choose to take. We need more great leaders in nursing, and I hope we all commit to doing our part! Leaders create a healthy work environment, and establish a culture of honor and respect through cultivating openness of mind and role-modeling these types of behaviors. Self-awareness and engaging others in self-discovery help to cultivate and create a climate of trust and honor.  Jean Watson (2009) recommended that health care providers develop an awareness of self as an essential component of transpersonal caring-healing, and to reflect on emergency, consciousness, and caring as the basis of nursing pra...
